Melbourne Victory’s affinity for all things Costa Rican has continued with the defending champions signing Marvin Angulo as an injury replacement player for Billy Celeski.
Angulo, 22, comes to the club from Costa Rican side Club Sport Herediano and is a lightly-framed attacking midfielder who has played two matches for the national side.
He arrives in Australia on October 1 and will take his place subject to medical, visa and FFA clearance.
“Marvin is a very quick attacking midfielder who can also play as a second striker and has an impressive free kick,” Melbourne Victory football operations manager Gary Cole said.
“He’s been on our radar since Ernie travelled to Costa Rica to watch Jose Luis Lopez play and spotted Marvin in the process.”
“We’ve followed his progress with interest ever since and it’s fantastic to reach an agreement with him and his club Herediano as cover for Billy Celeski.”
“We’re hoping to get him to Australia as soon as possible so he can complete his medical, and we can organise a visa for him to stay and play in Australia.”
Angulo will become the third Costa Rican to have been on the club’s books after star midfielder Carlos Hernandez and Jose Luis Lopez, who returned home recently to pursue a permanent spot in the national team.
Angulo’s arrival will fill Melbourne’s foreign quota, with Scot Grant Brebner, Brazilian Ney Fabiano and Thai Surat Sukha the other overseas players currently at the club.
