Petrovski warming to the task

Newcastle striker Sasho Petrovski has warned he is ready to hit his top form heading into the Jets A-League clash with the Queensland Roar at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday evening.

Petrovski scored two goals on his debut for the Jets in their 2-0 win over Korean side Ulsan in the Asian Champions League earlier this year. However, the evergreen striker is yet to register his first goal for Newcastle in the A-League, a situation he believes he will resolve this weekend.

“I can sense something coming,” Petrovski said after a rigorous training session on Friday morning.

“In year one of the A-League I didn’t start firing until round 6 or 7 and I ended up being top goal scorer at the end of the season and to have history repeat itself I think will not be a problem for me.”

“I told Branko (Jets coach Branko Culina) it would take a while for me to start to fire up but now I think I am ready to fire up and now I have to go out there and prove it.”

Petrovski pointed to a busy off-season where he joined the Jets from the Central Coast Mariners and immediately made an impact in the ACL which basically run through until the 2009/10 A-League pre-season where he sustained a couple of injuries.

But after a few half starts and a rest last week against Melbourne, Petrovski states he is raring to go.

“I have told Branko all along that it is going to be four or five weeks into the season to really get myself up there again,” he said.

“I never really had a break in the off-season and I had a mixed pre-season with a few niggles and not a lot of rest so the rest on Thursday has helped and coming into this game I am feeling fully fit and ready to go.”

Petrovksi said he could have physically played in last week’s 1-1 away draw against the Victory but in hindsight he is thankful for the break to recuperate and for the chance to gain a birds-eye view of the match.

“That was the decision that the coach thought was best for the team and we both accepted it and the team got a good result which was 1-1 away from home,” Petrovski said.

“But looking from the stands gives you a different perspective and seeing the things we have missed up front and knowing what kind of runs you have to make and the positions I need to be in hopefully I can go out there and be in the right position and tuck a few away.”
