Dual championship-winning goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos has walked out on Melbourne Victory, but is yet to secure a contract for an overseas club.
The former Hyundai A-League goalkeeper of the year, who played a huge role in Melbourne’s successes in the 2006/07 and 2008/09 A-League campaigns, has made no secret of his ambitions to play in Europe in a bid to further both his club and international careers.
But despite several trials with the club since the 2009 Grand Final, he is yet to secure a deal. Melbourne had already signed up New Zealand national goalkeeper Glen Moss from the Wellington Phoenix and has arguably the best young goalkeeper in the league in Mitch Langerak.
“Michael is an inaugural Melbourne Victory playing squad member who has been a fantastic servant of the club over the past four years,” Melbourne Victory football operations manager Gary Cole said.
“He has been a vital part of our two championship and premiership teams and we are very appreciative of his services.”
“Michael was offered a contract, which he rejected. He has ambitions to play overseas and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
“While he will be missed, we’re in a fantastic position with Mitchell and Glen, who are both outstanding goalkeepers and prospects for 2009/10 and beyond.”
Theoklitos was described by coach Ernie Merrick as a legend of the club after Grand Final success, having played 72 games and become the club’s clear No.1 choice after he and Eugene Galekovic battled for the position during the Victory’s inaugural campaign.
