The Hyundai A-League club formerly called the Queensland Roar will now be known as the Brisbane Roar.
Club owners thought long and hard about the change, but with the help of Football Federation Australia it was decided that a new name should be adopted.
Roar general manager Peter McLennan believes the name change would prove a historic moment for the club and that it was an exciting time for football in Brisbane.
“We as a club are extremely excited about the move to Brisbane Roar,” McLennan said.
“The decision didn’t come lightly, with the club and FFA conducting research in the Brisbane market about the name change.”
“The results of that research was certainly in favour of the shift of name from Queensland to Brisbane Roar.”
“We have the full support and encouragement of the FFA and our fantastic partners and look forward to a long and successful history as Brisbane Roar Football Club.”
Roar coach Frank Farina echoed McLennan’s sentiments and is looking forward to leading the newly named club.
“We play and train in Brisbane, so it makes sense for us to be the Brisbane Roar,” Farina said.
“We certainly don’t want to lose any of those outside Brisbane who have been loyal supporters, however we hope local fans now feel a stronger link to the club.”
The Roar will continue to wear their predominantly orange colour, with the new home and away playing strips to be unveiled prior to the upcoming A-League season.
