After biding his time on the sidelines, injury opened the door for Sydney goalkeeper Ivan Necevski earlier this season and his six-week stay in the first team has paid dividend with the 28-year-old signing a contract extension on Wednesday.
Following a stint with the Newcastle Jets, Necevski joined the Sky Blues from Blacktown City in 2007 and he’s happy to have his future finalised.
“I’m glad it’s sorted out and I’m looking forward to finishing off this year on a high and going into next year, and rebuilding again,” he said.
Coach John Kosmina was happy with the re-signing and rates the keeper as a chance to challenge Clint Bolton for the No.1 spot.
“I think Ivy’s a really solid keeper. He’s only signed for a year but he’s happy with that and he’s happy to stay and I’m happy to have him here, he’s a really good athlete,” Kosmina said.
Necevski was impressive when given his opportunity to start, but after relinquishing his spot to a fully-fit Bolton, the gloveman plans to keep the pressure on Sydney-s first-choice keeper.
“It was a bit disappointing a couple of weeks ago to go back to the bench, but hopefully things will change over the next couple of weeks and I can see out the rest of the season in the sticks,” he said.
“It’s really good for me to have someone like Clint there. We can sort of work against each other and have good competition for that No.1 spot.”
Necevski will be hoping for a recall to the starting side when Sydney FC returns to the Telstra Dome on Saturday for the ‘Arch Enemies’ clash with the Melbourne Victory.
