The Western Sydney Wanderers FC will face Brisbane Roar FC in the Foxtel Y-League 2019 Grand Final at ANZ Stadium on Friday 1 February (Kick-Off 4:20pm (AEDT)).
The Western Sydney Wanderers FC topped the Conference B table in extraordinary circumstances after defeating Sydney FC 2-1 in a match that was abandoned after 87 minutes due to lightning.
Going into the final match of the regular season, Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers FC were both locked on 15 points with Sydney FC having the advantage of a better goal difference. Based on this fact, a draw would have be enough for Sydney FC to qualify for the Foxtel Y-League 2019 Grand Final.
Sydney FC got off the perfect start and took the lead in the 19th minute before Mohamed Adam equalised in the 45th minute. The second half was played at a frenetic pace with both sides looking for winner. Just when it looked like Sydney FC was going to hold on to a draw and secure their Grand Final Berth, John Roberts gave the Wanderers the lead in the 83rd minute.
Four minutes later the match officials called the players from the field due to local lightning activity. After waiting for sixty minutes, and with no sign of the lightning activity abating, the match officials and match commissioner determined to abandon the match.
Under the competition regulations, as the match was abandoned in the second half, the result at the time of the abandonment was deemed the final result which meant that the Western Sydney Wanderers FC would be victorious and top the Conference B table.
Brisbane Roar FC were top of Conference A on goal difference after finishing equal with Melbourne City FC on 16 points.
The Foxtel Y-League 2019 Grand Final will be broadcast LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on FOX SPORTS 505 from 4.00pm (AEDT) on Friday and will be the first match of a double header with the Western Sydney Wanderers FC hosting the Newcastle Jets in the Hyundai A-League (Kick-Off 7:50pm (AEDT)).
