Injury ward: Yeboah boost for Wanderers

Markus Babbel has confirmed Kwame Yeboah is in contention to return for Western Sydney Wanderers’ Friday night fixture with Melbourne Victory.

Yeboah was a late withdrawal in last Saturday’s season-opening victory over Central Coast Mariners.

“We will see what happens on the (training) pitch. I hope he comes back because at the moment we don’t have a big squad,” Babbel said.

Yeboah was included in an extended Wanderers squad for the trip to Melbourne by Babbel on Thursday.

The Wanderers boss confirmed that Tarek Elrich will miss the trip after injuring his hamstring against the Mariners, while Patrick Ziegler’s long-term recovery from a knee injury continues. Bruce Kamau and Jordan O’Doherty will also miss the trip to Melbourne.

Victory coach Marco Kurz will be without German recruit Tim Hoogland for the next six weeks with a quad injury, while Robbie Kruse is still recovering from a hamstring injury that plagued the Caltex Socceroos attacker during pre-season.

Kantarovski absent for Newcastle

Newcastle Jets midfielder Ben Kantarovski will miss his side’s season-opening F3 derby against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday with a hamstring injury.

However, Abdiel Arroyo has been included by coach Ernie Merrick for the trip to Gosford with the Panamanian striker recovering from a hamstring strain picked up in a pre-season friendly against Sydney FC in September.

Wes Hoolahan and Kaine Sheppard are long-term absentees with ankle and foot injuries respectively, while for the Mariners, Korea Republic international Kim Eun-sun is absent with a leg complaint.

Elsey ruled out of City trip

Adelaide United will wrap key defender Jordan Elsey in cotton wool ahead of next Wednesday’s FFA Cup Final, with the centre back ruled out of Sunday’s clash with Melbourne City.

Elsey misses the Hyundai A-League encounter and faces a race against time if he is to feature in Adelaide’s FFA Cup Final against City on the Wednesday evening.

Frenchman Florin Berenguer is absent for Erick Mombaerts’ side due to a hamstring complaint.
