Le Fondre responds to Thailand link, Buhagiar makes long-awaited return

Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre has quashed talk of a possible move to Thai League heavyweights Buriram United.

Reports emerged this week Buriram were aiming to snatch the Sky Blues’ leading scorer in the January transfer window.

The Englishman scored in Sydney FC’s convincing 4-1 win over Newcastle Jets on Friday night, taking him to three goals from the opening four matches of the campaign.

Asked about the link to Buriram after the clash with the Jets, Le Fondre told Fox Sports: “It’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

“Fox Sports Asia tweeted me last night saying I was going to Thailand…I was like ‘I don’t know what’s going on here’.”

Le Fondre was an integral part of Sydney FC’s Championship win last season, scoring 18 goals in the Hyundai A-League.

And he’s started the 2019/20 campaign in excellent form as well, making him a vital member of Steve Corica’s squad looking to become the first club in eight years to go back-to-back.

Le Fondre wasn’t the only Sydney FC attacker in the spotlight at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night.

It was a special game for young speedster Trent Buhagiar, who finally got to make his debut for the club in the Hyundai A-League after suffering a serious injury prior to the 2018/19 campaign.

Buhagiar came off the bench for the last seven minutes and showed some encouraging signs in what was his first appearance in the Hyundai A-League in 565 days.

“It’s a big relief. After being out for a year with injury it was great to be back out on the pitch,” he told Fox Sports.

“I had a lot of support from all the boys and the coaching staff. Coming through the recovery the whole year, everyone was there to support me.”
