Western Sydney Wanderers attacker Kyra Cooney-Cross has been named the Westfield W-League’s Young Player of the Month for November.
The 17-year-old Queenslander marked her debut for her new club with a stoppage-time winner in the Westfield W-League curtain raiser as Western Sydney Wanderers beat Adelaide United 2-1.
Cooney-Cross came on as a 51st-minute substitute at Marconi Stadium, days after landing back in Australia, after helping the Westfield Young Matildas to a fourth-place finish at the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in Thailand.
She had only had two sessions with her new teammates ahead of her debut, following an off-season switch from Melbourne Victory, but Cooney-Cross has become a staple of an undefeated Western Sydney side, who won three out of three in November, and now lead the Westfield W-League table.
After her debut heroics, Cooney-Cross started the next three games in Dean Heffernan’s midfield and created an assist for American striker Kristen Hamilton to complete her hat-trick in the 3-1 win at Brisbane Roar.
