Le Fondre has eyes on Golden Boot after Siemsen claims Westfield W-League prize

Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre admits the frustration of seeing last season’s Hyundai A-League Golden Boot slip out of his grasp is powering him up in 2019/20.

The English marksman was talking tactics with the Sky Blues’ top goalscorer from the Westfield W-League season, Remy Siemsen, ahead of this weekend’s rebel Female Football Round.

Le Fondre is in pole position for the 2019/20 best goalscorer gong with 15 on the board, one ahead of Melbourne City strike rival Jamie Maclaren, and the goal-hungry pair joined forces ahead of Sydney’s Westfield W-League Semi Final against Melbourne Victory on Saturday.

Le Fondre echoed Siemsen’s sentiments – putting his scoring streak down to the quality of his service – and gave credit to his Hyundai A-League creative supply of Milos Ninkovic, Alex Baumjohann, Kosta Barbarouses and Anthony Caceras.

“Sydney as a whole, the culture is ingrained all the way through the club – the youth, the women’s game, the men’s game,” Le Fondre said.

“We’ve got a fantastic supporting casts and it’s on us to do the rest really.

“For me, I’m always about scoring goals and winning the Golden Boot.

“It was disappointed last season, I let it slip really with the last few weeks.”

Le Fondre netted 16 goals during his debut season down under, and was beaten only by then Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna, who notched 18 times.

The 33-year-old bagged only two goals in the Sky Blues’ final seven matches of the regular season and watched the award handed to to the Fijian flyer.

And Siemsen will get her hands on the prize Le Fondre desires after the 20-year-old  netted seven goals to secure a four-way share of the Westfield W-League Golden Boot during the 2019/20 campaign.

“Coming in I just wanted to score goals for fun and enjoy being around a good team, and good club culture,” Siemsen said.

“That’s definitely been something why I’ve had a decent season this season, because I’m surrounded by such quality players and they are feeding me great ball just to put it in the back of the net.”
