Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets: match preview

One point is all that separates Sydney FC from a historic fourth Hyundai A-League Premiership ahead of their clash with Newcastle Jets at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Tuesday.

Steve Corica’s Premiers-elect have been the standard-bearers and runaway leaders for much of the 2019/20 Hyundai A-League campaign and they are still in reaching distance of the greatest ever points haul in competition history.

The Sky Blues have one hand on the Premiers Plate and they need a single point to lift the trophy for the third time in four seasons and eclipse Melbourne Victory’s three successes.

But were Sydney able to take a maximum 15 points from their last five matches, Corica’s team would match the record 66 points claimed by Graham Arnold’s Sydney outfit in 2016/17 – despite one fewer league match being played in 2019/20.

The Harbour City outfit have had their New South Wales rivals’ number on two occasions already this season, in a 2-1 triumph in Round 4 and a 4-1 hammering in the Hunter last November.

Carl Robinson’s ninth-placed Jets have four matches to play and would need to go near perfect to stand an outside chance of gate-crashing the Finals Series. Spoiling Sydney FC’s party is essential if Newcastle are to extend their season.
