Casey Dumont has awarded Westfield W-League Save of Round 13 honours to Newcastle Jets stopper Claire Coelho, for her magnificent reactionary save to deny Canberra United a goal in her overall exemplary display.
Coelho denied Nicki Flannery’s close-range attempt by tipping the shot from inside the box off the crossbar and away.
The Jets went on to lose 1-0 but could have suffered a heavy defeat if not for Coelho’s work in between the sticks, which earned the Jets custodian a place in the Team of the Week for Round 13, presented by Bunnings Warehouse.
“She was just phenomenal,” Dumont said.
“The save that sticks out for me the most is the cut-back that Canberra United (did), which turns into a reaction save… Claire actually touches it onto the crossbar to prevent a goal.
“This is an amazing save because, one: it’s a reaction save from the cut-back, but two: for Claire to have an outstretched hand, diving in a reaction save in itself as wel is great goalkeeping, great positioning.
“Overall one of the hardest and best saves a goalkeeper can make.”
