Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Lewis Italiano earned Save of Matchweek 16 honours from Mark Bosnich for his diving block to keep a long-range Bruno Fornaroli bomb from flying into the back of the net.
The Jets faced Perth Glory in their second game of the Matchweek and came away with a point in the 1-1 draw.
Italiano’s read of Fornaroli’s swerving shot caught the eye of Bosnich when awarding the Save of Matchweek 16. The former Socceroos and English Premier League goalkeeper says Newcastle’s gloveman did well to adjust to save the attempt, which was hit from a dangerous central location.
“Save of the week does go to Lewis Italiano,” Bosnich said.
“Very, very difficult for a goalkeeper when a player is approaching the ball straight on.
“They hit it like it’s going to go to (the right) side of the goalkeeper but it starts straight and goes over to the left.
“The save from Bruno Fornaroli pretty much summed up that, when he went that way and flicked it over the bar.”
