Matchday Saturday Preview: A-League – April 17

The A-League returns to Tasmania for the first time in more than eight years when Western United host Central Coast Mariners in the first of two fixtures on Saturday, April 17.

Western United’s Festival of Football begins with a clash against Central Coast Mariners at UTAS Stadium.

Mark Rudan takes his team to Tasmania in eighth position on the A-League table. A 3-2 loss to Wellington Phoenix in Matchweek 16 halted United’s two-game winning streak, a place in the top six is not out of sight for a side with the least amount of games of any A-League side this season

Central Coast need a positive result to fend off a number of challengers closing in at the top of the table – the league-leaders have notched just one win in five games, and watched Adelaide United move to within one point of the league-leaders at the end of Matchweek 16.

Alen Stajcic’s side will take a repeat result to what was recorded in Matchweek 7, when the Mariners came from behind to win 3-2 over United at Central Coast Stadium.

At the conclusion of Western United v Central Coast Mariners, attention turns to AAMI Park where Melbourne City play host to Melbourne Victory in the second Melbourne Derby of the 2020/21 season.

City won 6-0 over their local rivals last time out. The dominant win at Marvel Stadium was the third on a run of six consecutive City wins as Patrick Kisnorbo took his team hurtling into Premiership contention. But while City raced into the top four, Victory have stuck planted to the foot of the A-League table.

A win on Saturday night would change that, however.

The second-bottom Newcastle Jets drew with Perth Glory in the final game of Matchweek 16, leaving Craig Deans’ side one point above Victory. Earning three points against City would allow Victory to jump the Jets into 11th place on the A-League table.
