Thursday night football preview: Western United v Wellington Phoenix – April 22

Western United’s Tasmanian Festival of Football continues in Matchweek 18, as Wellington Phoenix travel to face the Green and Black at UTAS Stadium on Thursday, April 22.

Mark Rudan’s side won the first of two fixtures in Tasmania against Central Coast Mariners in Matchweek 17. United continue their stay in preparation for a clash with the Phoenix on Thursday, with a place in the top six on the line.

Three points would help United above Western Sydney Wanderers into the Finals Series standings. With 23 points from 15 games, Rudan’s team could technically rise as high as fourth by winning their games in hand on the Wanderers, Sydney FC and Macarthur FC.

Wellington will approach the Thursday-night clash with eagerness to deal their opponents a second defeat in the space of 11 days.

These two teams last met in Matchweek 16 on April 11. Wellington emerged victorious after twice staving off United fight-backs to edge the contest 3-2. Ben Waine was the hero on the night at WIN Stadium, scoring a 90th-minute winner.

Rudan’s departure from his role as Phoenix head coach to take the reins at United for their inaugural A-League campaign in 2019/20 sparked an instantaneous rivalry between these two sides. United won their first fixture against Wellington but Ufuk Talay’s side have taken the honours in the following three, giving the Green and Black plenty of motivation heading into Matchweek 18.
