Central Coast Mariners will look to keep pace with the league leaders when travelling to face Melbourne Victory on Sunday, May 2 at AAMI Park.
The Mariners are without a win in four games. The unwanted run allowed Melbourne City, Sydney FC and Adelaide United above Alen Stajcic’s side on the table heading into the Sunday afternoon fixture, but the Mariners can jump back to within a point of City on top spot with a win over Victory.
Steve Kean’s visiting side have offered a glimpse of improvement in its two games since former head coach Grant Brebner’s departure.
Interim boss Kean oversaw two Matchweek 18 fixtures: a 5-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and 1-0 loss to Sydney FC. Victory will take encouragement from the Big Blue defeat, remaining in the game against the Premiers Plate contenders until the final whistle.
Newcastle Jets are bottom of the A-League table on 13 points – one behind Victory – but that gap could extend to four should Kean’s side clinch a shock win in Gosford.
These two sides last met in Matchweek 14 when Victory travelled to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw at Central Coast Stadium.
