Wednesday night preview: A-League, May 12

Central Coast Mariners will look to end a five-game winless run when travelling to face Brisbane Roar at Moreton Daily Stadium on Wednesday, May 12.

It’s the first of two fixtures taking place on Wednesday evening, as the action continues when Perth Glory host Western United at HBF Park (kick-off 9.20pm AEST).

Brisbane approach the Mariners clash in seventh place on the A-League table, but can jump five teams into second by earning three points over the Gosford side.

Amongst the congestion in the top six are the Mariners in fourth position on the table. Alen Stajcic’s team are one of four teams locked on 32 points, but a drought-snapping win would help the former league-leaders claim second spot at Brisbane’s expense to move within six points of Melbourne City in first.

These two sides last met on April 28, when the Roar travelled to Central Coast Stadium to thump the Mariners 4-0 on their own turf. Expect to see a Central Coast side eager for revenge in this reverse fixture, which gives the visiting side an opportunity to answer back to Warren Moon’s in-form side.

Perth Glory host Western United at HBF Park in the final game of Matchweek 20 after the action unfolds between Brisbane and Central Coast at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Perth ended a six-game winless run of their own on Sunday night, beating Melbourne Victory 2-1 to leave the slim chance of playing Finals Series football on the table. Glory are nine points outside the top six, but have two games in hand on the sixth-placed Wanderers.

Western United, meanwhile, need to respond after getting flattened by the Wanderers last time out. The Red and Black beat Mark Rudan’s side 5-0 at Bankwest Stadium on Friday night, taking sixth spot on the table at United’s expense.

The visiting side can draw level on 31 points with the Wanderers once more by beating Perth for the second time this season. The first meeting between the two sides for the 2020/21 campaign finished 5-4 in United’s favour on a chaotic afternoon at GMHBA Stadium.
