Melbourne Victory travel to face Sydney FC in the third Big Blue of the 2020/21 A-League season on Wednesday night – the first of two fixtures set to round out the Matchweek 21 action.
After the meeting between two bitter rivals at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium comes to its conclusion, Perth Glory will host Adelaide United at HBF Park in a fixture capable of making or breaking the home side’s push for a place in the Finals Series.
Victory are without a Big Blue win since January 26, 2019. The Sky Blues have won seven on the trot since, including two in the 2020/21 season. Steve Kean’s side have lost three consecutive games leading into the Wednesday-night fixture, and with Newcastle Jets just one point behind Victory will hope to get the points needed to put a gap between themselves and the league’s bottom-placed side.
The Sky Blues welcomed Adam Le Fondre back to the squad against Western United last time out, and the striker netted the decisive goal on his A-League return in a 1-0 win. Sydney are ten points adrift of Melbourne City on top of the table, but can jump Central Coast Mariners into second by recording a third win over Victory for the campaign.
Perth welcome the Reds to HBF Park in the final game of Matchweek 21 on a flying run of form after notching three successive wins to breathe life into their top-six push. Andy Keogh scored four goals in his side’s recent 5-1 drubbing of Western Sydney Wanderers to help Perth close the gap to sixth-placed Brisbane Roar to just three points.
Adelaide put an end to a five-game winless streak on Sunday afternoon, beating Brisbane Roar 1-0 at Coopers Stadium to jump Macarthur FC into fourth spot on the table. While Perth look to force their way into the Finals Series standings, Carl Veart’s Reds will be aiming to consolidate their spot with a win on the road. If the Sky Blues fail to beat Victory on Wednesday Adelaide can claim second spot by putting an end to Perth’s hot streak.
These two sides last met in Matchweek 7 when Perth recorded a 2-1 win at Coopers Stadium.
