Just days after securing the 2020/21 A-League Premiership, Melbourne City return to action against a Brisbane Roar side looking to consolidate their spot in the Finals Series standings at Moreton Daily Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Roar beat Newcastle Jets 2-1 in the first game of Matchweek 22 to break clear of both Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory – the two teams which began the Matchweek level on 31 points with Warren Moon’s side.
Both Glory and the Wanderers failed to win their respective 23rd games of the season in the aftermath of Roar’s victory over the Jets, leaving the sixth-placed side with the opportunity to capitalise on a game in hand to extend its gap over Perth in seventh to five points with a win over City on Tuesday night.
Patrick Kisnorbo’s team wrapped up the Premiers Plate with a 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night. The league leaders will be looking to build momentum into the Finals Series in the coming weeks and would relish a win over the Roar – a team on the rise and hoping to cause a stir in the post-season.
These two sides last met in Matchweek 20 when Brisbane came from two goals down to draw level with City only for Scott Galloway to fire the soon-to-be Premiers to victory with a second-half winner. It was the second of two wins for City over Brisbane in 2020/21 after a 1-0 win at Moreton Daily Stadium in Matchweek 1.
