Sunday football preview: A-League, May 30

Wellington Phoenix welcome Perth Glory to Eden Park for a high-stakes Distance Derby in the first of two A-League fixtures on Sunday, May 30.

Captain Ulises Dávila returns to Ufuk Talay’s squad as the seventh-placed ‘Nix look to jump Macarthur FC into sixth spot on the A-League table with a win in Aukland. It’s the second and final Phoenix game to be played in New Zealand for the season after a record crowd packed Sky Stadium to watch their side beat Western United 3-0 in Matchweek 22.

Perth are in eighth heading into the Distance Derby, sitting just four points behind Macarthur with a game in hand. Richard Garcia’s team are preparing for three consecutive away games to round out the 2020/21 season; failure to beat the ‘Nix will all-but end Perth’s chances of reaching the Finals Series.

In-form attacker Chris Ikonomidis is unavailable for selection after departing to join Graham Arnold’s Socceroos camp this week. The home side looked almost certain to be without Reno Piscopo after he succumbed to a shoulder injury against Western Sydney last time out, but the creative midfielder has been named in Talay’s squad to take on the Glory.

The Phoenix have two Distance Derby wins on the board in 2020/21.

Western Sydney Wanderers hoSt Brisbane Roar in the second A-League fixture on Sunday afternoon.

The two sides head to Bankwest Stadium with very different form lines: back-to-back Matchweek 22 wins helped catapult the Roar into the top six while the Wanderers dropped into ninth thanks to three successive defeats.

Trailing Macarthur by five points with two games to play means there’s no room for error for Carl Robinson’s side. A highly unlikely Finals Series berth is still on offer for the Wanderers, but the Roar could put their slim hopes to bed with a win on the road.

Warren Moon’s Brisbane squad is bolstered by four returning players: Riku Danzaki, Macaulay Gillesphey, Tom Aldred and Josh Brindell-South, while Mitchell Duke misses out for the Red and Black after receiving a call-up to Arnold’s Socceroos squad.
