Schalke axe coach Kramer after Cup loss

Schalke have dismissed coach Frank Kramer, a day after they lost 5-1 to Hoffenheim and were eliminated from the German Cup in the second round.

“We would like to thank him for his professionalism and commitment and wish him all the best for the future,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement.

“After achieving promotion last season, our goal for the new campaign was to remain in the Bundesliga.

“Until recently we were convinced that we could turn things around with the current coaching setup, but from our point of view, we’ve now reached a point in time that we have to make a change,” sporting director Rouven Schröder said.

Kramer was in charge for only four months. In the Bundesliga, Schalke are 17th, already battling against relegation, after losing six out of 10 games under his command.

“The way that we’ve been playing, especially in the away games against Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, is not worthy of FC Schalke 04,” board member for sport Peter Knäbel said.

It is still unclear who will be on the sidelines during the away game at Hertha Berlin on Sunday. The training session on Wednesday will be led by the assistant coaches.

Former Bochum coach Thomas Reis is said to be the favourite to take over.
