The Young Socceroos – featuring nine A-Leagues-based players in the starting XI – trailed the Netherlands 1-0 before Brisbane Roar sensation Thomas Waddingham equalised in the 58th minute to eventually force penalties.
Waddingham has emerged as the player to watch for the Roar this Isuzu UTE A-League season after playing a starring role in Brisbane’s run to the Australia Cup final.
The 18-year-old scored his fourth Australia Cup goal in as many games at Allianz Stadium on October 7, becoming the youngest cup final scorer since the tournament recommenced in 2014.
Against the Dutch, Australia were not to be denied in the shoot-out as they now look ahead to a date with Denmark on October 18 (AEDT).
