Ultimate team goal or flash of brilliance? Take your pick

IT was an encouraging start that the first goal of the 2021-22 Liberty A-League season went straight on to the short list for goal of the week.

At the end of the day it’s goals that fans want to see, and with 14 across the opening five games there was no shortage in round one.

Debutant Holly McNamara kicked things off with her curling effort 80 minutes into Melbourne City’s trip to Canberra, but there were contenders for the best of the round from Catherine Zimmerman, Remy Siemsen, Lauren Allen and others.

The task of choosing which is elevated into top spot belongs to a panel of four footballing minds: ex-Matilda Sarah Walsh, former NSL striker Andy Harper, ex-Canberra midfielder Grace Gill, and journalist Anna Harrington.

Georgia Yeoman-Dale and Grace Gill celebrate a goal playing for Canberra. Georgia is a judge for our Isuzu UTE A-League Goal of the Week, while Grace is on our Liberty A-League judging panel.

For Gill, the best goal is the kind that “brings an audible reaction from someone watching, that moment where your reaction is instinctive amazement.

“For instance, I love a good team goal that builds up from one team’s goalkeeper – a possession-based move that’s smooth rather than flashy , is really pleasing.

“But then you see a moment of individual brilliance and it gets you out of your seat – especially when you see the kind of shot where the ball doesn’t deviate, there’s no texture on it, but it’s just unstoppable.

“Hopefully choosing the best goal of the week will just get harder and harder.”

Then, it is over to you, when we decide our Goal of the Month!
