‘Thank you to myself’: Diamanti interview an instant-classic after stunning match-winner

In the aftermath of one of the great Isuzu UTE A-League strikes, came a post-match interview to match.

It was Alessandro Diamanti in all his glory. At 39 years of age, the former Italian international showed every ounce of his class with an effervescent performance for Western United against Sydney FC highlighted by a long-range stunner of the highest order.

With the game locked level at 0-0, Western head coach John Aloisi turned to his maestro off the bench, in the hope he would break the game apart.

With less than five minutes to play, Diamanti produced the match-winner. And what a goal it was:

The final whistle blew with Diamanti’s goal the decider. Then came the post-match interview, in which he had only one man to thank.

“Dia, is that one of the best ones you’ve ever struck?” Asked Paramount+ pitch-side reporter Tim Morgan.

“I don’t know… I just know I deserve it,” Diamanti replied.

I deserve it because I don’t give up nothing… I’m very happy for me, honestly. I have to say thank you to myself.

“I’m not scared of nothing. Not scared, just I try. Sometimes you have to try, try something different when the game is even, it’s tough, you have to think outside the box.”
