23 A-Leagues prospects selected for tournament duty with Young Socceroos

Young Socceroos head coach Trevor Morgan has selected an all-A-Leagues 23-player squad to take part in the 2024 ASEAN Under-19 Boys’ Championship in Surakarta, Indonesia this month.

The tournament, set to take place between July 17-29, pits 12 members from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Football Federation against one another.

The Young Socceroos will set out to win the tournament formerly known as the AFF Championship for a sixth time, having done so previously in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2016 and 2019.

Morgan’s 23-player squad consists entirely of players signed to Isuzu UTE A-League clubs; Marcus Younis (Western Sydney Wanderers), Jake Najdovski (Western United) and Zac de Jesus (Sydney FC) have all debuted in the Isuzu UTE A-League at their respective clubs while the likes of Tiago Quintal (Sydney FC) and Fabian Talladira (Adelaide United) have featured in senior squads.

One to watch in the 23-player squad is Melbourne Victory’s Jesse Hoey who scored 40 goals for Victory’s youth teams last season and has even been likened to a star Socceroo; the teenager will look to continue his rise with an impactful display in Indonesia with the Young Socceroos in July.

The current Young Socceroos squad takes on a different look to the one that travelled to South America in June; the ASEAN U19 Boys’ Championship has provided opportunities for both the new players to impress and for head coach Morgan to strengthen the depth of the selection pool for crucial 2025 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers in September.

“This tournament is a perfect chance to develop these players through competitive matches and allow them to show what they can bring come September,” Morgan said.

“We’ve made several considerations when selecting this squad, including allowing players who travelled to South America in June a chance to rest before they join A-League pre-season at their respective clubs, and most importantly, the opportunity for this group players to gain experience and perform for their country, something they have earned.

“We’ve had the chance to completely change the squad between assemblies and the fact we can do this shows the depth of talent available, and the belief we have in giving players the chance to step up. It’s important we continue to develop this group as they move through our pathway, and being involved in tournament football is the perfect environment to achieve that.”

The Young Socceroos have been drawn in Group B for the tournament and will face Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam at Gelora 10 November Stadium.
