‘Rapid rise’ of A-Leagues prospect continues after preserving Young Socceroos’ perfect record

Melbourne City young gun Medin Memeti was the hero for the semi-final-bound Subway Young Socceroos, who made it three wins from three games at the ASEAN Under-19 Boys’ Championships.

Memeti scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute as Australia edged Myanmar 1-0 to close out their Group B campaign with a perfect record in Indonesia.

Only last week, academy graduate Memeti signed his first professional contract – a three-year deal with City in the Isuzu UTE A-League following his “rapid rise”.

On Wednesday, the 17-year-old was on hand to head home the rebound 10 minutes before half-time after Perth Glory’s Adam Bugarija hit the crossbar with a free-kick.

The U19 Boys’ Championships semi-final is on Friday.

The Subway Young Socceroos – featuring an all-A-Leagues-based squad – are out to win the tournament formerly known as the AFF Championship for a sixth time, having done so previously in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2016 and 2019, while they will look to triumph on the back of the Subway Joeys claiming the U16 event earlier this month.

Australia had chances throughout the contest and they were unlucky not to score more than one goal.

Western United’s Luke Vickery, who was drafted into the squad following an injury, hit the post in the 52nd minute and a follow-up effort from his Aussie teammate was cleared off the line.

Memeti almost doubled the lead with a fine piece of skill during the closing stages.
