Spain have won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, edging England 1-0 in a gripping final at Stadium Australia that provided the epic conclusion to a tournament that delivered in drama and entertainment from start to finish.
Spain captain Olga Carmona’s first-half strike proved the difference after 90 minutes, with England keeper Mary Earps saving Jenni Hermoso’s penalty in the 69th minute to give the Lionesses hope of becoming reigning European and World champions.
But Spain proved too good for their European rivals, seeing out 13 minutes of extra time to become just the fifth nation in history to win a Women’s World Cup.
Prior to the trophy lift, the player of the tournament, young player of the tournament and goalkeeper of the tournament were recognised in a special ceremony, with Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati taking out the top individual honour of the tournament’s Golden Ball.
