Isuzu UTE Goal of the Week: Introducing our all star panel

How do you define a perfect goal? Is it a piledriver from 30m, a mazy dribble and cute finish, or a team goal that fillets the opposition through the slickness of passing?

It’s a question that goes to the heart of selecting the best goal each week from those scored across the A-Leagues matches up and down the country.

Georgia Yeoman-Dale playing for Western Sydney Wanderers earlier this year.

If goals are the absolute currency of football, different judges put different weights on the value of individual skill or power, or the merits of a collective score over an individual.

That’s why KEEPUP’s Goal of the Week for the A-Leagues will be chosen by a panel of four, to seek some form of consensus over which has been the outstanding goal from each round.

Three ex-internationals – former Socceroos Brett Holman and Alex Brosque, and ex-Matilda Georgia Yeoman-Dale – will comprise the panel for the A-League / Men’s competition this season, along with this writer, while a similar panel for the A-League / Women’s will be announced shortly.

Alex Brosque is Sydney FC’s record goalscorer.

Each week we will publish a shortlist on Monday, before revealing the winner of Goal of the Week on Wednesday.

While Bruno Fornaroli’s long-distance bomb for Perth stole most headlines there is much to like in some of the other goals of this first weekend – the controlled technique of Lachlan Rose to volley in a corner on the full; the build-up and the turn-and-cross by Angus Thurgate for Valentino Yuel’s header; or even the deftness of Josh Nisbet’s finish for the Mariners.

Before the winner is confirmed, let the debates begin…
