Round 5 Preview

This is the official FFA preview for Westfield W-League (WWL) Round 5.

Stats, facts & milestones

The Westfield W-League recorded its biggest winning margin in Round 4, with Queensland defeating the Central Coast 5-0 at Campbelltown Stadium. However, the five-goal margin falls well short of the record winning margin in the old Women-s National League, when the NSW Sapphires scored a stunning 10-0 victory over Victoria Vision in Round 3 of the 2001/02 season.

This week in women-s history

On 17 November 17 2001, the NSW Sapphires recorded the biggest-ever winning margin in any Australian national league match, defeating Victoria Vision 10-0 in Sydney. Goalscorers for NSW in this Women-s National League match were Kelly Golebiowski (6-, 57-, 73-), Joanne Peters (12-), Alicia Cavanagh (14-, 41-), Lisa Warrener (36-), Heather Garriock (44-, 46+-) and Nicole Kimber (66-)

This week marks the seventeenth anniversary of the inaugural FIFA Women-s World Cup, held in China in November 1991. The historic first match of the 1991 Women-s World Cup was between hosts China and eventual runners- up Norway, played on 16 November; China-s 4-0 victory in this match was quite remarkable considering that Norway ended up reaching the World Cup final, losing 2-1 to the USA. Australia almost made it to the 1991 Women-s World Cup – having to finish on top of the three-team Oceania Qualifying ladder, Australia finished just behind group winners New Zealand on goal difference only. Australia has qualified for every Women-s World Cup since.
