Western Sydney Wanderers make stats history after thrashing Phoenix

Western Sydney Wanderers made history on Sunday night as their attack, bolstered by Caltex Socceroo Chris Ikonomidis, went on a rampage against Wellington Phoenix.

After a 4-0 thrashing of the Kiwi outfit at ANZ Stadium, Wanderers’ shots stat was an impressive 33.

This is the highest in the club’s history in the Hyundai A-League.

What’s more, of those 33 shots, an impressive 11 were on target.

By contrast, Phoenix could only muster five shots with just one on target.

It was no coincidence that Wanderers’ shot stats were good after Chris Ikonomidis’ impressive home debut.

Playing on the right wing, the Lazio loanee looked the part by scoring a neat debut goal and assisting for Oriol Riera’s opener.

He was a constant threat down the flank.

So good was Ikonomidis that only four other players have taken more shots in an A-League game for the Wanderers than his six shots.

Just imagine when Alvaro Cejudo gets back from his injury layoff: Riera, Cejudo and Ikonomidis up front for Josep Gombau.

Expect more impressive attack stats in the coming weeks from the men in red and black.
