Western Sydney Wanderers dealt major blow after young gun suffers season-ending ACL injury

Western Sydney Wanderers young gun Dylan Scicluna will miss the rest of the Isuzu UTE A-League season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Wanderers announced the devastating injury news on Tuesday after Scicluna suffered a serious knee injury in the closing stages of Western Sydney’s 3-2 win over Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

Scans confirmed the ACL injury ahead of Wednesday’s showdown against Macarthur Bulls at CommBank Stadium on New Year’s Day.

“The Wanderers will give their full support to Scicluna during this time,” a statement read.

It is a major blow for the in-form Wanderers and 20-year-old young gun Scicluna.

Scicluna had emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Isuzu UTE A-League amid his breakout season, which had yielded his first professional goal in nine appearances in 2024-25 after a decade abroad with Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers in England.

Last month, Wanderers head coach Alen Stajcic lauded Malta youth international Scicluna after telling reporters: “He has some qualities that can make him one of the best midfielders in the league if he keeps improving”.

Scicluna was also called up to Malta’s senior national team for the first time in November before withdrawing due to injury.

Western Sydney, meanwhile, are now four games unbeaten following back-to-back victories to sit seventh in the standings – outside of the top six on goal difference while they are only four points adrift of second-placed Adelaide.
