Resolute Roar withstand Wanderers to stay inside the top 3

Brisbane Roar will finish round 8 of the Isuzu Ute A-League season in third place after holding Western Sydney Wanderers to a 0-0 draw at Commbank Stadium.

The Wanderers had the best chances of the match but ultimately couldn’t complete the job as the Roar’s impressive defence stood up to the waves of attack.

Bozhidar Kraev had comfortably the best chance of the game, heading Jarrod Carluccio’s cross over the bar from very close range in the 88th minute.

Alex Bonetig also came agonisingly close to a winner for the Wanderers, having his cleared effort off the line in the 55th minute by the ultra-impressive Lucas Herrington.

Brisbane have now gone six undefeated since their one and only loss to Wellington in round 2, and kept their third successive clean sheet.

The six clean sheets they have kept are the most of any club, a testament to the newfound rigidity the Roar have found under Michael Valkanis.

Brisbane can’t be shifted from the top 3 this weekend with Melbourne City’s match against Macarthur having been rescheduled due to commitments in Asia.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers sit seventh, just a point behind Perth in fifth.

Western Sydney have a tough assignment against current league leaders Auckland next Friday night, while the Roar take on Macarthur in Campbelltown earlier that evening.
