Wanderers end home hoodoo with win over Jets

Western Sydney Wanderers have notched their first home win of the season after accounting for the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at a humid Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday.

A maiden Hyundai A-League goal to Wanderers’ 19-year-old striker Lachlan Scott opened the scoring just before the break, with Jaushua Sotirio giving the hosts a two goal cushion after the interval.

The match started at a frenetic pace with Tony Popovic’s side creating a couple of chances inside the opening couple of minutes, while Andrew Nabbout and Ma Leilei were both lively for the Jets.

In all there was a whopping 17 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes – with the last of those proving telling on the scoreboard.

It was a much tighter contest after the break, with the heat no doubt playing a part on proceedings.

The Wanderers were content to preserve their advantage – which Sotirio extended midway through the half – with the visitors unable to get a foothold in the match thereafter.

The result sees Western Sydney leapfrog Newcastle on the table, with the red and black sitting just outside the top six on goal difference.
