Sydney FC sign experienced Aussie GK after ‘7-year journey’ abroad

Sydney FC have signed 27-year-old Australian goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares on a two-season contract ahead of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The Sydney-born shot-stopper is set for his first stint in the Isuzu UTE A-League – the latest stop on a fascinating career path to date.

A product of the United States college system, the goalkeeper’s professional career began in Romania in 2020 with FC Rapid Bucuresti; then came moves to fellow Romanian clubs SSU Politehnica Timisoara and CS Tunari before a return to Australia with NPLM NSW club Rockdale Ilinden FC.

Devenish-Meares has been tipped by Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay to provide genuine competition to Andrew Redmayne for the team’s first-choice goalkeeping role in the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

“Harrison has shown he is an excellent keeper and I expect him to put real pressure on Andrew and Gus (Hoefsloot) for the starting jersey,” Talay said.

“He has been in excellent form for Rockdale and is a huge reason why they are top of the New South Wales National Premier League.

“We have the best set of keepers in the A-League now and it is going to be a fascinating duel between them this campaign.”

Devenish-Meares is Sydney’s first signing of the off-season from outside of the club’s academy.

The 27-year-old says it’s a proud moment to sign for his hometown club after seven years spent abroad.

“I am thrilled and honoured to sign for my hometown club, the club I supported throughout my childhood,” he said.

“It has taken a seven-year journey overseas since my time as a junior with Northern Tigers FC, but I am incredibly proud to officially become a Sky Blue.”
