Sydney FC have sacked chief executive Dirk Melton after just eight months in the job due to “a number of formal complaints of a serious nature” from fellow staff members.
And until a seventh CEO in as many years is appointed to the position, current head of football and former chief executive Stefan Kamasz will fill the role on a caretaker basis.
Melton was only appointed to the role midway through May last year before taking it up a month later, coming to the Hyundai A-League after stints at NRL clubs Canterbury and before that St George Illawarra.
But having been one of the main players behind the landing of prized recruit Brett Emerton in the off-season, Melton is on his way immediately following a unanimous board decision to remove him.
While Sydney FC refused to confirm the exact nature of the allegations against him, they did say via a statement on Monday afternoon the claims had been “investigated and revealed behaviour in Mr Melton’s management of staff which was completely unacceptable”.
“The board acknowledges that, during his period as chief executive officer, Mr Melton brought enthusiasm and passion to the role and had set on a path to achieve the strategic long term goals of the club,” the statement read.
“However, the board determined that Mr Melton’s behaviour towards staff was inconsistent with his obligations and could not be tolerated by the board, and as a consequence the club could not continue with him as chief executive officer.”
