Sydney needed a moment of innovation from former LaLiga striker Campuzano in the 58th minute to sink the Mariners in front of a strong crowd at Leichhardt Oval, where Patrick Wood came off the bench to seal the points in stoppage time.

The victory gave the Sky Blues – who honoured centurion Joe Lolley – lift-off in 2025-26 following their week-one defeat away to Adelaide United as Sydney reunited with club great Andrew Redmayne for the first time since the retired Socceroos goalkeeper departed for Central Coast.

It took the Mariners 80 minutes to register a shot on target as goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares kept out Central Coast substitute Abdelelah Faisal.
