Central Coast Mariners defender Storm Roux received a first-half red card just eight minutes after coming off the bench in Saturday night’s F3 Derby against Newcastle Jets.
Roux came on the pitch to replace the injured Mikael Doka in the 31st minute at McDonald Jones Stadium but saw red just eight minutes later for an elbow into the chest of Jets midfielder Callum Timmins.
After tangling near the hallway line and, both Timmins and Roux got to their feet and as Timmins instigated contact with Roux, the Mariners defender responded with a swinging elbow into the midriff of his opponent.
“That there, you just don’t need that,” said co-commentator Daniel McBreen on the Network 10 broadcast.
“It’s so obvious as well, he’s not even trying to get away with it, the cameraman is right there, the fourth official is right there.”

On the Network 10 half-time show, former Central Coast and Newcastle striker Roy O’Donovan identified a potential attempt from Timmins to step on the hand of Roux that led to the Roux’s elbow in reaction.
“When you’ve got VAR, you don’t get away with anything,” O’Donovan said.
“I think Storm Roux thought, originally, that Timmins here has a little stand on his hand… he thinks he has a little bit of a stamp as he gets up… he’s elbowed him, thrown the arm after and VAR has got no choice. It’s a clear red card.”
