Macarthur’s ‘serial winner’ drafted into Socceroos squad after Australia Cup success

Macarthur FC midfielder Luke Brattan has been called into the Subway Socceroos squad as part of two injury changes ahead of two important 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers.

Brattan and former Sydney FC star Patrick Yazbek (Nashville SC) have been drafted into Tony Popovic’s squad following injuries to Massimo Luongo (Ipswich Town) and Connor Metcalfe (St Pauli) ahead of qualifying fixtures against China in Adelaide on October 10 and Japan in Saitama five days later.

For Brattan, it represents his first Socceroos call-up since 2018 when he was an injury replacement player for Mile Jedinak.

The 34-year-old is yet to earn a cap for Australia, having previously represented the Young Socceroos.

A four-time Isuzu UTE A-League champion, Brattan has hit the ground running at new club Macarthur where he has made a big impact since arriving from Sydney FC.

The veteran star played a key role in Macarthur claiming their second Australia Cup title in three years after the Bulls upstaged Melbourne Victory 1-0 at AAMI Park last month.

Brattan became the first player in the competition’s history to win the Australia Cup title at three separate teams (Melbourne City, Sydney FC and Macarthur).

It was the 10th piece of domestic silverware collected by Brattan throughout his career (three Australia Cups, four Isuzu UTE A-League Championships, and three Isuzu UTE A-League Premierships).

“I hate losing,” said Brattan, after defeating Victory in September’s Australia Cup decider.

“I’m a serial winner, I’m not going to apologise for it.”

He joins Melbourne Victory trio Daniel Arzani, Jason Geria and Nishan Velupillay, and Melbourne City captain Aziz Behich as the Isuzu UTE A-League-based players in the Socceroos squad for this month’s international window.
