A-Leagues champion’s reaction to ‘lifelong’ Socceroos dream: ‘It’s a big moment’

Melbourne City star Kai Trewin realised a “lifelong dream” with the CommBank Socceroos over the weekend, and the moment is not lost on him.

Trewin made his debut as the Socceroos suffered a 1-0 defeat against South American nation Venezuela in the United States on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Isuzu UTE A-League champion has regularly been called up by Tony Popovic during his Socceroos tenure but without making it onto the park. That changed in the friendly with Venezuela after he was named in the starting XI alongside City team-mate Patrick Beach.

“It feels amazing,” Trewin told Football Australia media after debuting alongside Sydney FC duo Al Hassan Toure and Paul Okon-Engstler.

“Speaking to my family after the game, everyone’s really excited.

“It’s a lifelong dream of mine to become a Socceroo one day and I was able to make that happen. It’s a great moment for me.”

Trewin added: “Everyone’s very emotional.

“They’ve been on the ride with me the whole time since I was a little boy. They also know it was my dream to become a Socceroo.

“It’s a big moment for the entire family.”

With another friendly against Colombia looming on Wednesday (AEDT) and the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup on the horizon, Trewin wants more.

“Now that I have a taste, the next thing I want to do is to keep playing games or as many games I can,” he said.

“Help the team in whatever way I can and gain more experience before the World Cup.”

“Just the international experience and keeping the standards the boss expects, and the rest of the playing group expects,” Trewin continued.

“Every camp the bar is raising and trying to stay at that level is what I’m striving to do.”
