Socceroos bolter? Red-hot A-Leagues gun ‘deserves to have a look in’

Macarthur Bulls head coach Mile Sterjovski believes in-form attacker Jed Drew deserves to be considered for Subway Socceroos selection.

Drew has blitzed the Isuzu UTE A-League in less than a week, scoring back-to-back braces to lead Macarthur to wins over Perth Glory and Western Sydney Wanderers and second position in the standings.

After his two-goal haul away to lowly Perth on Friday night, the 21-year-old brought in the New Year with another brace to sink in-form Western Sydney 3-2 at CommBank Stadium on Wednesday.

Drew has now scored five goals in 2024-25 to sit equal second in the Golden Boot standings.

“Jed’s a player who’s getting better with each game,” Sterjovski told reporters post-match in Western Sydney.

“We’ve said it time and time again about being consistent. I think he’s getting that consistency and maturity.

“He’s stepping up in big games when we need him.”

With former Melbourne Victory, Western Sydney and Glory boss Tony Popovic at the helm of the Socceroos, A-Leagues players have been given opportunities to showcase their skills on the international stage.

Hayden Matthews (Sydney FC), Anthony Caceres (Sydney FC), Luke Brattan (Macarthur Bulls) and Nishan Velupillay (Melbourne Victory) have also debuted since Popovic’s appointment in September.

The Socceroos will not resume their 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifying campaign until March but asked if Drew should be considered by Australia, retired Socceroo Sterjovski replied: Definitely.

“I still think he has a long way to go but in the form he’s in, I think he should be looked at.”

Sterjovski – a 43-time Australia international – added: “I definitely think he has the potential to do it. He has the qualities to do it, it’s just about being consistent.

“To play at the top level, whether it’s here, for the Socceroos or overseas, you need to be consistent and do those things week in and week out.

“The form he’s in at the moment, deserves for him to have a look in.”
