The ‘surreal’ aspect of Toure’s Socceroos call-up after contact from 2 other nations

What is better than earning your first CommBank Socceroos call-up? Being in camp with your brother.

That is the equation for Sydney FC star Al Hassan Toure, who is in the Australia squad alongside younger brother Mohamed Toure for a pair of international friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia in the United States.

Al Hassan Toure has been rewarded by Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic after a fine start to life with the Sky Blues in the Isuzu UTE A-League, having scored his maiden professional hat-trick in Round 3.

Now, the 25-year-old forward is in the national team squad with familiar face and fellow Adelaide United graduate Mohamed, who is playing for Randers in Denmark.

“We’ve played together before in Adelaide. We grew up playing together. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so it’ll be amazing to play together again and just bring excitement and speed to the team – hopefully we can do that,” he told reporters as the Socceroos continue to prepare for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

“It’s kind of surreal to have brothers playing for the same team. We’ve talked about it with my dad and mum … we’re just so excited, not only to play together, but to represent our country together – it’s amazing.

“We just want to enjoy the moment. If we get the chance to play together, even better. We’re both very excited and very happy.”

Al Hassan Toure, who has previously played for Australia at Under-23 level, is also eligible to represent Guinea and Liberia.

Guinea – the nation of his birth, and Liberia, where his parents hail from, both reached out in the past.

“I’m lucky to have those nations that I can play for,” he said.

“Yes, they’ve contacted me before in the past.

“At that stage, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do and I was just focusing more on my club football because I had injuries and I was just focused on getting fit and not rushing anything, just playing well at my club to open doors for me… like it’s happened now.

“I think I started the season well and the boss has decided to call me in for camp so I’m happy with that.”
