Already a fan favourite amongst Melbourne Victory supporters, Archie Thompson endeared himself even further and wrote himself into Hyundai A-League folklore in the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 Grand Final.
Thompson boldly declared before the decider against Adelaide United he would score a hat-trick at Etihad Stadium to help Victory win their first title.
Little did the 55,436-strong crowd know he would be wrong – but in stunning fashion.
Thompson ran riot as Victory thumped a 10-man Reds side 6-0.
It started midway through the first half as he finished off a neat move with a shot which just snuck over the line after hitting the post.
He completed his hat-trick before the break and then further strikes in the 56th and 72nd minutes sent the home fans crazy and wrote Thompson’s name into the history books.
