Transfer news: Adelaide United sign Slovenian striker

Adelaide United have bolstered their attacking stocks for the rest of the Hyundai A-League season with the addition of Slovenian striker Džengis Čavušević.

The 30-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the current campaign and is a huge boost to Marco Kurz’s squad as they look to solidify a place in the top six ahead of the upcoming Hyundai A-League Finals Series.

“I’m very happy to be here in Adelaide and I cannot wait to start training and playing with the team,” Čavušević said.

“I’m excited for life in Australia, but the most important thing for me is the football and this is the first priority.

“I’ve looked at some websites about Adelaide and it is a city with nice beaches, good weather, but most importantly a great stadium for football.

“For me, the team comes first and I am not someone who will be only thinking of myself when on the football field.

“I’m here to win games and help the team and will give 100 per cent effort.”

Čavušević began his career in his homeland before moving to Switzerland in 2010.

The former Wil 1900, FC St. Gallen, and FC Zurich striker has also received two caps from Slovenia, featuring against Albania and Colombia.

“I’m very happy that we have been able to bring Džengis to our club for the rest of this season,” Reds boss Kurz said.

“Džengis will bring a lot of experience from Europe to our team and this will be important as we get closer to the finals.

“He is a very strong player and he is a hard worker, which I am sure will be a very good fit for our team.

“Because we have no game this weekend, signing Džengis now is good timing because he will have time to get used to our football before our next home game against Central Coast, which is important.”

With the Split Round in the Hyundai A-League, the Reds are next in action on Saturday, February 17 when they host the Mariners at Coopers Stadium.
