Ramsay: Heart spirit still strong

Melbourne Heart winger Iain Ramsay said the club’s playing and coaching group are rallying around one another as their woeful season drags on.

Melbourne Heart winger Iain Ramsay said the club’s playing and coaching group are rallying around one another as their woeful season drags on.

The Heart sit bottom of the A-League with just two points from seven matches, and the club’s fans have been vocal in calling for the sacking of head coach John Aloisi.

Ramsay – preparing to take on former club Adelaide United at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon – said the players were committed to playing for one another and also their under-fire boss.

“Most definitely, we’re definitely playing for the coaching staff,” Ramsay said on Thursday.

“Not only for them, for each other as well. There’s a lot of positives to take away from the matches we’ve played, there’s been a couple of games where we haven’t played as well as we should have. But we’re very positive.”

Ramsay said the onus was on the playing group to change the outlook of Heart’s disgruntled fan base.

“You want your fans to be happy, and the only way you make them happy is get results,” he said.

“And most importantly, we want to do it for each other as well, and for the coaching staff.

“At the end of the day, we’re the players that go out there – they (the coaching staff) can only do so much with the tactics… but we’ve got to get the results.

“It’s been a tough time, but we’re sticking together which is the main thing, which is a really positive thing, and some good signs are for this weekend to turn things around.”

Ramsay said Aloisi was not taking their winless season easy.

“He’s a strong character,” he said.

“He’s just like every one of us in the squad. He hates losing, and we’re positive and we’re sticking together.

“We know it’s a tough time right now, it’s been seven, eight games coming up now, we’re going to turn it around sooner or later.”

Ramsay added injured marquee man Harry Kewell’s presence around the club is beneficial to the side, despite the veteran not appearing in the first team since round one.

“Just having him around the club helps us,” Ramsay said of Kewell.

“It hasn’t been the best start, but I’m sure once he’s back on the park, he’ll help us that much more.”
