Wellington Phoenix midfielder Michael McGlinchey looked to the positives of a “great performance” against Central Coast Mariners that rectified the team’s recent defensive issues.
While they might have managed more from their first-half opportunities, Phoenix looked composed and compact in earning a 0-0 draw at Central Coast Stadium on New Year’s Eve.
The clean sheet was an encouraging response to the four goals they shipped against Sydney FC last weekend, having also copped four at home to the Mariners in November.
“It’s not the result we wanted but I think we put in a good performance and got the point,” McGlinchey told Fox Sports.
“Defensively we were sound and we probably could have nicked one in the first-half.
“We’ve been conceding too many goals and that’s something we’ve talked about.
“Obviously we want to keep clean sheets.
“I think tonight we put a great performance in, we just didn’t get that break in front of goal.”
The draw leaves Wellington nine points adrift of the top six, albeit with a game in hand.
Darije Kalezic’s side next visit Melbourne City on Saturday, before returning home to host Victory.
