Sydney FC reveal plan to ‘unleash’ academy product’s potential after contract extension

Sydney FC striker Patrick Wood has signed a one-year contract extension set to keep the 22-year-old at the club until the end of the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The Subway Olyroo is an academy of Sydney’s academy and, after debuting for the Sky Blues in the 2020 AFC Champions League campaign, has scored 15 goals in just 26 starts.

With the next two seasons of his career tied to Sydney FC, Wood says it’s now up to him to repay the faith of head coach Ufuk Talay with his on-field performances.

“I’m excited to be staying for two more years and I have the belief and determination to earn a regular first-team position, contributing as many goals and assists as I can,” he said.

“I’ve got to repay the faith Uffy (Head Coach Ufuk Talay) has put in me with performances and goals.

“I’m ready to take my game to the next level and playing alongside the likes of Douglas Costa and some of the great players we have here, I believe I can do that.

“Having the support of the club has made me grow, and I can’t wait to push forward in the coming seasons.”

Wood has been included in Talay’s extended squad for Sydney’s clash with Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on Saturday, October 19 in the first round of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season. The 22-year-old striker has been backed by his coach to become a significant figure at the Sky Blues.

“He’s a player that gives his all every time he puts on the shirt. He plays with a lot of pride,” Talay said.

“Woody wears his heart on his sleeve and wants to do what is best for the club, fans and supporters.

“He has a great amount of unearthed talent which we want to see unleashed in the next couple of years and his attitude is first-class.

“I’m looking forward to working with him.”
