‘The Phoenix is our attachment’

Margaret Marshall – Wellington Phoenix

When Margaret Marshall first started following the Wellington Phoenix, she had no idea how important the club would one day become to her family life.

But after moving across the ditch, she needed a “New Zealand fix”, and the Phoenix fit the bill.

Now, the club provides a way for Margaret to connect with her grandchildren, as supporters of the Phoenix from across the ditch.

“I’ve been a fan from day one, but a very quiet fan. My partner hated sport at the time, so I just quietly supported them,” she said.

“I moved to Australia in 2010, and went to a few games with my son during that time, but still just very quietly.

“Then, my grandchildren started playing soccer, and I saw the opportunity to get them along with me so I didn’t have to go to games on my own.

“I live on the Central Coast, and my two granddaughters live there as well. The girls wanted to support the Mariners, because they had been on TV walking out with the teams.

“I took every opportunity to turn them around, including taking them to a Phoenix game, and sitting with the Phoenix fanbase in their Mariners shirts.

“I managed to do it, which was great. The girls don’t have Mariners shirts anymore. There’s no conflict; they’re just Phoenix fans.

“We came to the Semi-Final last season. We flew over, spent four days in Wellington, where we’d never been before. Then we flew again to the first derby against Auckland.

“They are definitely avid Phoenix fans. Those kids now have also got some of their Australian friends supporting the Nix. At Unite Round, we took two new people to the Little Corner of Yellow.

“The kids are at a hard age for a grandma to be involved with them, but the Phoenix is our attachment. I get to see them nearly every weekend, whether it’s a women’s game, a men’s game, or we’re watching it on TV because it’s in Wellington.

“It’s such a connection, it’s fabulous.”

An unforgettable membership moment for Joe Lolley’s ‘lucky charm’

Amelia Mackechnie – Sydney FC

Amelia Mackechnie received the ultimate late Christmas present in late December when she walked out onto the Allianz Stadium turf, hand in hand with Sydney FC star Joe Lolley, ahead of the Sky Blues’ clash with Melbourne Victory.

Nervous but excited, the young Sydney FC member formed a lifelong memory alongside her favourite player. It was the sort of moment that made committing to the club as a member, and making the two-and-a-half-hour journey with her dad to Moore Park from their family home in Kangaroo Valley all the more worthwhile.

“Me and my dad have both been Sydney FC members for about 5 years, we go to as many home games as we can,” she said.

“It takes us 2.5 hours from our home in Kangaroo Valley to get there, we sometimes take my friends, and they love Sydney FC and always now ask to come with us to games.

“My favourite moment was when I was selected last year to be a player mascot and I got to walk out on to the field with my favourite player Joe Lolley.

“I was very nervous, but at the same time excited. Joe said hi to me and asked my name and we then walked out of the tunnel onto the field, it felt like everyone in the stadium was looking at me and was very excited.

“The game was against Melbourne Victory and Joe scored two goals, and I felt like I was his lucky charm. When I went to school on Monday, I got to tell my class and friends all about this, and everyone was so excited for me. This was one of my favourite days ever and I hope I can do it again.”

Football curiosity sparks ‘wonderful tradition’ for foundation Bulls members

Carla Messer – Macarthur FC

The Messer family knew little about football before Macarthur FC set up shop in Campbelltown – but the decision to sign up as members of the new Isuzu UTE A-League club was a masterstroke from mother of three Carla.

Five seasons later, the Messer family is part of the broader family of the Bulls, with trips to Campbelltown Sports Stadium for gamedays now seen as a “wonderful tradition.”

“It was just before Christmas and I happened to see a post on Facebook advertising the inaugural memberships for the Macarthur Bulls,” Carla Messer said.

“Having not been a supporter of the A-Leagues prior, I had heard some talk of a new club in the area but really didn’t give it much thought.

Former Macarthur star Ariath Piol with a young Bulls fan.

“So when I saw the post I thought this may be a nice present for the family to join up and support a new local team – so we did!

“When we got to finally attending our first game, we weren’t really sure what to expect – whilst we love going to our kids’ games who all played and being more of an NRL supporter family, we weren’t really sure whether we were going to enjoy the experience or not.

“By the end of the first half we were all hooked and have been members ever since!

“Moving spots three times until we finally found a spot that kept us (mostly) dry for the games we always seemed to get with rain and storms, I would be able to count on one hand how many games we have missed in the five seasons.

“We love being active supporters – we bring other friends and family along with us when we can, go down to get signatures when we remember the sharpie and go to meet the player sessions. We love this is in our hometown location, that we can have an awesome night out and be home 20 minutes later (something that is hard to do living in the south west of Sydney).

“The kids love going and are currently asking when we will get a home game again as they are missing it. Becoming a Bulls member has been a wonderful tradition created with our family – bring on the 2025-26 season!”
