Melbourne Victory recruit Young Matilda: ‘I can help the squad achieve big things’

Melbourne Victory have lured Sofia Sakalis back to Victoria from Liberty A-League rivals Perth Glory.

Sakalis, who made her A-Leagues debut at Melbourne City in 2017, returns to Melbourne for the 2024-25 campaign after making 41 appearances for the Glory over three seasons.

The 22-year-old is an Australian youth international having represented the CommBank Junior Matildas and CommBank Young Matildas.

“I’m excited to be back home and playing football this season with Melbourne Victory,” said Sakalis, who received Football Victoria’s 2022 Gold Medal as the best player in NPLW VIC.

“Victory has been a club that has set the standard over the past couple of seasons and I feel I can help the squad achieve big things this campaign.

“I’m looking forward to working under Jeff and his coaching team as well as a really talented group of players and can’t wait to get started.”

Sakalis is Victory’s third new signing heading into the Liberty A-League season after Alana Jancevski and Nickoletta Flannery.

Victory have also re-signed Alex Chidiac, Rachel Lowe, Sara D’Appolonia, Alana Murphy, Paige Zois, Emily Gielnik, Ella O’Grady, Ava Briedis, Beattie Goad, Lia Privitelli, Lydia Williams, Courtney Newbon, Kayla Morrison, Laura Pickett and Rosie Curtis.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Sofia back to Victoria for the upcoming A-League Women’s season,” said head coach Jeff Hopkins.

“Sofia has been an incredibly consistent performer over in Western Australia and has matured as a footballer in her time away from Victoria where we believe she will be a strong contributor to our squad.

“It’s great to have a Victorian and a consistent performer in the NPL Victoria in our squad for the upcoming season and we’re looking forward to seeing her deliver.”
