100-game hero! Victory star bags milestone match-winner to thwart Champions in GF rematch

Melbourne Victory signing Rhianna Pollicina scored the solitary goal in a 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in Saturday afternoon’s Grand Final rematch at the Home of the Matildas.

Pollicina’s 55th-minute strike was the difference as Victory earned a slice of revenge after the Mariners’ Grand Final triumph at AAMI Park to end last season as Ninja A-League Champions.

Following last season’s Grand Final loss, Victory head coach Jeff Hopkins signed Policina from rivals Melbourne City as part of an aggressive recruitment drive and in her 100th Ninja A-League game, the experienced midfielder scored her second goal of the season to clinch three points for her new club.

Victory have now won back-to-back games after a Round 1 loss to Brisbane Roar.

For the Mariners, the momentum generated by an opening-round win over Adelaide United has stalled due to consecutive losses to Melbourne City and Victory as head coach Kory Babington returns to the drawing board in search of improvement heading into Round 4 and a clash with an unbeaten Sydney FC.
