Beach starred as City stunned J1 League outfit Machida Zelvia in Japan, where Andrew Nabbout’s 94th-minute goal guided the Australian champions to back-to-back ACL Elite wins heading into Saturday night’s blockbuster Melbourne Derby against rivals Melbourne Victory.

The 22-year-old has not looked back since debuting for City last season, helping the club conquer Victory in an historic 2025 Grand Final.

On this week’s episode of Total A-Leagues, Beach’s performance on the continent was brought into focus as the Australia youth international continues to impress, with CommBank Socceroos captain and A-Leagues graduate Mathew Ryan referenced.

Former A-Leagues star and retired Socceroo Tommy Oar said: “I think Patrick Beach’s performance in this game was outstanding.

“Some of the saves he made, and it had shades of Ante Covic in the ACL final (with Western Sydney Wanderers) all those years ago. Like the saves he was pulling off were remarkable and I think Melbourne City owe the result to his performance.”

Total A-Leagues host Vince Rugari added: “There are question marks I think about our production line of goalkeepers in Australia. We’ve always been so good at producing top-class goalkeepers.

“And it seems like in the last few years in the A-League, at least, there’s a lot of older ones, and there’s some foreign ones, and it’s like, who’s the next Matty Ryan to emerge?

“That’s a big label, and I don’t want to put that on Patrick Beach just yet, but that’s a great performance and he’s young.”

Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque continued: “The signs are there.

“A lot of young goalkeepers, they need performances like that to grow, and we’ve seen with what he’s done already for Melbourne city, so he just needs to keep going. You know, not feel that pressure but it doesn’t seem like he does.”

Oar concluded by saying: “How hard is it when you’re a young player in the ACL, you play in the A-League on the weekend, you do all that travel, you’re going to Japan, where you think, ‘Oh, we’re going to be under the pump for 90 minutes here’.

“There’s a big mental challenge to overcome there, and for someone of his age to show that maturity and handle it so well is a testament to him really.”

Beach’s next challenge comes on Saturday night when his City take on Victory in the first Melbourne Derby of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2025-26 season.
